Nepalese Prime Minister At Supreme Court

Issue 05, February 03, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

January 30, 2013: following the summon sent by the Supreme Court of Nepal on January 18, 2013, Nepalese Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai appeared in person yesterday at the Supreme Court of Nepal to defend the charge of contempt of court for ordering to stop the investigation into the murder of the journalist Dekendra Thapa in Dailekha in 2004.

Prime Minster Dr Bhattarai told the court that he did not order to stop the investigation into the murder case but he told the local authorities that following the Comprehensive Peace Agreement reached between the Government of Nepal and the then CPN-Maoist in 2006, all the cases of the conflict period should be taken up by the Truth And Reconciliation Commission not by the regular court.

The Prime Minister told the court that the government has already recommended President Dr Ram Baran Yadav to issue a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) ordinance but the President has put it on hold following the opposition parties’ objection to it.

Meanwhile, following the report submitted by the District Police Office, Dailekh District Attorney Dambar Kafle filed a case in the district court yesterday against nine suspects in murdering journalist Thapa demanding life imprisonment and confiscation of their property for committing the murder.

Twenty-two journalists that had fled Dailekh following the death threats returned to Dailekh from Surkhet on Tuesday, according to the RSS news posted on thehimalayantimes.com. The district had been without the FM radios and newspapers during their absence.
