By KTM Metro Reporter
After the failure of the talks among the leaders of four major political parties such as NC, NC-D, CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist in alliance on the 22-point demand put forward by the CPN-Maoist to meet before holding an election for a Constituent Assembly that would write a Nepalese people’s constitution, four Maoist Ministers jointly tendered the resignation from their position to the Interim Head of State and Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and leaving their ministerial vehicles behind headed to the open theater in Kathmandu to hold a mass meeting on Tuesday, September 18, 2007.
In the mass meeting, Maoist Chairman Prachanda was supposed to make a historic speech but did not show up giving the health reason. Second-in-command Dr, Baburam Bhattarai made a historic speech telling the audience giving the example of a mythical character called kumbhakarna who sleeps six months without waking up that the seven-party alliance did not listen to the 22-point demand not to mention meeting it. He said that the Maoists quit the government as it would not hold an election for a CA in a free and fair manner. He reiterated the need for meeting the prerequisites such as an election system that would ensure proportional representation of all Nepalis in the CA, and removal of the remnants of the feudalism declaring Nepal a republic before the election.
Dr. Bhattarai also said that the Maoists’ movement would be peaceful but if the government attempted to quell the movement by force then they might take up arms again.
