Gacchedar In Aircraft Purchase Deal

Issue 02, January 09, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

January 5, 2011: greedy Deputy Prime Minster Bijaya Gacchedar has attempted to bribe one of the members of the Public Account Committee (PAC) for approving the purchase of aircrafts for Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC). In addition, Gacchedar has forced Prime Minister Madhav Nepal to approve the purchase of two Airbus aircrafts otherwise threatening him to pull out of the coalition government causing the fall of Madhav government according to the Nepalese media reporting the news quoting the US confidential cables leaked by the website Wikileaks.

Apparently, the Europeans have been lobbying the Nepalese minister for the purchase of the Airbus rather than the Boeings. So, anybody can guess how much commission Mr. Gacchedar might be receiving from the aircraft company for the aircraft deal.

The PAC has been instructing the government and the NAC management to follow the Public Procurement Act of 2006 for purchasing aircrafts. But the government and the NAC management have ignored the instructions of the PAC and have paid the non-refundable advance of Rs 57 million to the French Airbus Company.

The Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a corruption case against the NAC management at the Special Court. The officials implicated in the corruption case by the CIAA have in turn filed a case at the Supreme Court of Nepal questioning the authority of the CIAA for filing a corruption case against the NAC management.
