Election of Politburo Members in China

BY KTM Metro Reporter On Monday, October 22, 2007, the first plenary session of the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) reelected Hu Jintao the member of the nine-member Political Bureau Standing Committee, and elected four new faces such as Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang to it, and dropped three members of the Political Bureau Standing Committee of the 16th CPC Central Committee, 68-year-old Zeng Qinghong, 69-year-old Wu Guanzheng and 72-year-old Luo Gan. All four newly elected members of the nine-member Political Bureau Standing Committee are filling the slots vacated by officials that have reached or are about to reach the mandatory retirement age of 68. Xi, 54, and Li, 52, served as the party chiefs in Shanghai and Liaoning respectively. Li was the member of the 16th and 15th CPC central committee. He Guoqiang, 63, was the head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee. Zhou, 64, was the minister of public security. Both He and Zhou have been the members of the Political Bureau of the 16th CPC Central Committee since 2002. Hu Jintao remained the head of the nine-member Political Bureau Standing Committee of the Central Committee of CPC, the Party's top leadership. He succeeded Jiang Zemin as the Party leader at the 16th CPC National Congress in November 2002.
