Golden Globes: Meryl Streep attacks Donald Trump in speech

BBC NEWS

January 9, 2017

Actress Meryl Streep strongly criticized US President-elect Donald Trump as she received a lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes.

While Streep did not name Mr Trump, she used almost the entire speech to attack his behavior and policies. The three-time Oscar-winning actress said his actions legitimized bullying.

"This instinct to humiliate when it's modeled by someone in the public platform by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody's life. Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence."

Streep said she was "stunned" during the presidential election campaign when the Republican candidate imitated disabled New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski.

The president-elect, who is due to be inaugurated in less than two weeks, dismissed the actress as "a Hillary lover" in a telephone interview with the New York Times.

He reportedly said he was "not surprised" he had come under attack by "liberal movie people".

The audience cheered when Streep reviewed the background of many of her colleagues, saying: "Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners."

She also urged the press to "hold power to account" and asked for contributions to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The actress received the Cecil B DeMille award for outstanding contribution to entertainment.
