Former King Gyanendra For Paying Taxes and Utility Bills

issue 33, August 16, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On August 12, 2009, the Ministry of Finance has disclosed that former King Gyanendra Shah has written a letter to the Ministry of Finance asking for concession for paying taxes and utility bills. He knows that the Ministry of Finance has nothing to do with the utility bills as the concerned agencies such as Nepal Electricity Authority, Telecom and Kathmandu Valley Drinking Water Limited collect the respective fees for supplying the utilities; only the tax offices are under the Ministry of Finance; however, Gyanendra has written a letter to the Ministry of Finance most probably for publicity. He needs to be shameful for not paying utility bills and taxes when he was a king or a businessman; however, he was bold enough to collect twice the amount of the budget allocated to the palace violating the law when he was a king in 2005.

From the news item published in the state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of August 13, 2009 that Gyanendra Shah, his daughter and his brother’s family members have not paid utility bills and various taxes every sincere citizen pays.

Gyanendra Shah was a businessman before being the king, and ran a number of businesses including large hotels. However, his family members and he collected the state allowances given to the royal family members. Every state employee while in service is not allowed by law to run any business for a profit. However, Gyanendra Shah has made millions of rupees if not billions from his business at the same time collected the state allowances given to the then royal family members.
