US Assistance To Nepal $ 316.5 million For Five Years

Issue 39, September 26, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

September 22, 2010: in a ceremony held at the Ministry of Finance on September 21, 2010, Joint Secretary to Ministry of Finance Lal Shanker Ghimire, and Mission Director of USAID/Nepal Dr. Kevin A. Rushing have signed the agreement on the U.S. Government providing Nepal with additional $111.5 million through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) making $316.5 million for the five years starting 2009 and ending 2014 as the revised upgraded assistance ‘The Rising Nepal’ of September 22, 2010 reports quoting the press release of the US Embassy in Kathmandu.

The additional funds will be used to implement and achieve the objectives of the three new initiatives announced by President Obama, addressing global hunger and food security, health, and climate change. With this focus, USAID anticipates more attention and funding for Nepal, likely to be a partner in all three initiatives.  Over the next year, USAID will launch several new activities in support of them.

Other on-going USAID programs in Nepal: support the peace process; strengthen democratic institutions and processes; improve governance and rule of law; provide training and education for youth employment; support early childhood education; fight trafficking in persons; provide sustainable, accessible, and quality basic health services; and enhance competitiveness in targeted economic sub-sectors and promote inclusive economic growth.
