Biratnagar Jute Mill Working Again After Five Years

Issue 52, December 29, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 23, 2013: Biratnagar Jute Mill has resumed working on Saturday, December 21, 2013 after the hiatus of five years, according to the news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’.

The Jute Mill had been closed for the last five years. The government leased it to the Indian Company called Winsome International. The Indian company ran the test production for eight months before running it to the commercial operation on Saturday, December 21, 2013.

Opening the commercial operation of the mill, Finance Minister Shankar Prasad Koirala said that the re-operation of the mill was a good message to the industrial sector of the country.

Leasing such sick mills to a private company is one of the best methods of privatizing the State-run industries. The State has already proved that it could not run profit-oriented business profitably.

Indian Company Winsome International has been running three jute mills each in West Bengal and Bihar.

The government has leased the Biratnagar Jute Mill to Winsome at the rent of Rs. 13.5 million rupees per year for the period of 25 years. Currently, the company is producing 15 tones of jute products every day, according to the news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’.
