By KTM Metro Reporter

August 31, 2012: Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai addressing the plenary session of the 16th Summit of Non-Aligned Movement in Teheran, today said that Nepal as a founding member upholds the fundamental principles of NAM, and puts emphasis on the need for rejuvenating NAM to cater to the changing needs of time. Nepalese prime minister also said that NAM could deliver any equitable benefits or sustainable solutions to the existing and emerging problems only through a multilateral approach at a global scale to meet the formidable challenges and various crises the world has been facing today. NAM was created to pursue the goals of peace, justice and equality and it should champion this cause with more vigor.

The prime minister further said that an environment conducive to a lasting peace and security needed to be created for the people-centered development “He further underscored the importance of having qualitative improvement in the North-South cooperation and the strengthening and consolidation of the South–South cooperation as a complement to the N-S cooperation,” the statement said, according to thehimalayantimes.com

Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai said Nepal prefers open, rule-based, equitable, predictable and non-discriminatory trading as well as financial and monetary systems but the prospect of world trade for promoting development in the poorer economies of the NAM member countries has been upset by non-enforcement of the Doha Development Agenda. "As current chair of the Global Coordination Bureau of LDCs, we emphasize full implementation of the commitments made in the Istanbul Program of Action, 2011-2020 in all the eight priority areas," said PM Bhattarai, “our genuine aspirations to achieve broad-based, sustainable and inclusive growth on the arduous path of graduating from the LDC status can be realized only when enhanced, comprehensive and robust international support measures are put in place to bolster our development endeavors." He also urged the NAM delegates to commit to make NAM a voice for the voiceless and a power for the powerless, according to nepalnews.com
