Former Chief Executive Received Seven-year Jail Term For Corruption

Kathmandu: Former Chief Executive of Nepal Tourism Board Subash Niraula has received a seven-year jail sentence and a fine of NPR 13.52 million for different irregularities he had committed in the business of the Board while in office from the Special Court.
A joint bench of Judges Baburam Regmi, Dwarika Nath Joshi and Narayan Prasad Pokherel of the Special Court has awarded Subash Niraula a seven-year jail sentence and a fine of NPR 13.52 million, and his associates such as chief accountant Anil Kumar Das of the Board, a six-year jail term and a fine of NRP 8.5 million, and Mahendra Khanal of World Wide Travels a fine of NPR 154,000.
Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had filed a case against them embezzling NPR 1.39 billion causing irregularities in procurements, and abusing their authority while in office.
Former Chief Executive Subash Niraula said that he would appeal to the Supreme Court in other words he would not serve the jail term and pay the fine immediately.
Once the indicted persons appealed to the Supreme Court they have a chance of remaining free and without paying a fine, as in the case of the Govinda Raj Joshi, if the case would remain pending at the Supreme Court. They would remain out of jail forever, as has been Joshi so far even then Joshi’s colleagues Khum Bahadur Khadaka, Niranjan Wagle and others had paid the fines and served the jail terms.
