Expanded Government

Issue 25, June 21, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On June 17, 2009, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has sworn in five more ministers in the presence of the President at the presidential residence, and six more ministers of state at the State Secretariat, Singhadarbar thus making the cabinet of 22 ministers.

None of the United Democratic Madhesh Front (UDMF) has been present in the oath-taking ceremony. UDMF is the most important player in making a support for the new government. However, the NC and the CPN-UML has shared in most important portfolios such as Home, Water resources and so on in different names denying the UDMF’s claims for such portfolios. For example, they split the Ministry of Water Resources into Ministry of Energy and Ministry of Irrigation. The NC members of Cabinet took both these ministries whereas the CPN-UML member took the Home. UDMF is the loose coalition of all three Madheshi parties such as Madheshi People’s Rights Forum, Tarai Madhesh Democratic Party, and Nepal Sadbhavana Party.

The NC and the CPN-UML leaders have badly defeated the claim of arrogant leader of Madheshi People’s Rights Forum and Deputy Prime Minister Gacchedar for the portfolio of Home, and Water Resources for the members of his faction of the party. What will be the result of such actions of the NC and CPM-UML leaders remains to be seen.
