Nepal for Involving China in Settling Border Dispute with India

Issue 47, November 23, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On Thursday, November 20, 2008, after the meeting with the Chinese Military Delegation, Nepalese Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bamdev Gautam told the reporters that he sought the Chinese involvement in the border dispute with India at Kalapani, Indian name for the Nepalese territory. Nepal has a different name for this area.

Deputy Prime Minister Gautam said that Nepal, China and India has a common border at this point so, it would be appropriate to involve China in resolving the territorial dispute between India and Nepal.

India has been staying on this area since 1962 when India and China went to a war. Nepal has been asking India to vacate this area but India has been staying on in this area, as it is a strategic area from the military point of view and does not seem to be leaving this area.

Nepal has a porous border with Tibet in the north and an open border with India on all three sides: east, west and south. China thinks that the Nepalese-open border with India is the main reason for so many Tibetan protests held in Nepal against the Chinese rule in Tibet. Most of the Tibetan dissidents use the porous border to sneak into Nepal and go on to India.
