January 7, 2013: President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav and Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai held a meeting this morning to discuss the arrest of Nepal Army Colonel Kumar Lama in Britain.  British police had arrested NA Colonel Lama on Thursday, January 3, 2013 on the charge of his involvement in human rights violation during the armed conflict in Nepal. At the meeting, Prime Minister Bhattarai told the president that such incidents happened due to the non-formation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in time by forging a consensus among political parties, according to the RSS news posted on thehimalayantimes.com of today.

Today, Head of State President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav invited the constitutional experts to discuss the actions the president possibly could take without breaching the constitution.  The constitutional experts advised the president to give a collective responsibility to the political parties for forging a consensus rather than extending the deadline for building a consensus government; they also told the President that political consensus should be made as the President alone was not in a position to do anything, according to the RSS news posted on thehimalayantimes.com today. Constitutional experts such as Dr Bhimarjun Acharya, Dr Purna Man Shakya, Bipin Adhikari and Madhav Basnet among others were at the meeting held at the Shital Niwas today.

Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal met with President Dr Ram Baran Yadav at Shital Niwas today and discussed the possibility of consensus between the parties by Thursday when the seventh deadline given by the President expires. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Khanal said the President was worried about the present political situation and that the chance of building a consensus was getting slimmer. "The efforts for consensus will still continue, nonetheless," added he, according to the nepalnews.com.

the Federal Democratic Front (FDF): an alliance led by Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum-Nepal Chairman Upendra Yadav today sought the NC’s clear stand on the identity-based federalism and rights of ethnic and Dalit communities, Madhesis and women at the meeting held at the Koirala’s Maharagunj residence in Kathmandu before the alliance could commit to support the NC to oust the Baburam Bhattarai-led government through agitation. NC President Sushil Koirala invited the FDF leaders to discuss a range of issues related to a consensus government and contents of the new constitution at his residence in Maharajgunj, according to ‘HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE’ of today.
