Elections in June Under Serious Discussion

March 31, 2013: the Election Commission (EC) held a meeting with the top leaders of the four major political parties at the office of the commission yesterday. The EC said that it faced a serious challenge to holding elections in June. The cadres of the CPN-Maoist-Vaidhya had been obstructing the updating of the voters’ lists in the districts. The EC asked the top leaders such as Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda, President of NC Sushil Koirala, Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal, and Chairman of Madheshi People’s Rights Forum-Democratic Vijaya Gacchedar to create an environment conducive to holding elections. To this end, the leaders needed to talk to the leaders of the opposing political parties. The top leaders in turn told the EC that they had been making efforts on bringing the opposing leaders to participate in the elections, they suggested the EC to get prepared for the elections and they also asked the EC to set the date of elections not doubting about holding elections, according to the news in ‘gorkhapatra’ of today.
Head of State President Dr Ram Baran Yadav called out leaders of the four major political parties to his office yesterday to find out the status of holding elections. The president urged the top leaders to let the leaders of other political parties participate in the high-level political committee of the four parties to create an environment conducive to holding elections in June, the news in ‘gorkhapatra’ of today quoted the press advisor to the president as saying.
After the meeting with the head of state President Yadav, speaking to the reporters, President of NC Sushil Koirala said that holding discussion with other political parties including the CPN-Maoist-Vidhay was necessary to set the date of elections.
Opposing political leaders had been saying that the four major political parties held the monopoly on decision-making for the country. They wanted to dissolve the high-level political committee of the four major political parties, and annulled the 11-point agreement, the four parties had reached to set up the Interim Election Council, and dissolve the Interim Election Council and form a new all-party government to hold elections.
