Confrontation Or Confirmation

Issue 37, September 9, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

September 4, 2012: the opposition coalition of NC and CPN-UML did not attend the interaction held by the Federal Democratic Republican Alliance (FDRA) today stating the FDRA would lead political parties to confrontation. Although the Vaidhya-led CPN-Maoist was not a member of the NC and CPN-UML coalition, its leaders did not bother to attend the interaction. Speaking at the interaction, Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda said that the NC could lead a government if an agreement on the issues concerning a new constitution and the reinstatement of the Constituent Assembly would reach. Prachanda also said that the CA should be reinstated only for a few days to promulgate a constitution after settling all issues concerning a new constitution.

Comments: if the NC and CPN-UML did not attend even an interaction held by the FDRA meant they were aggressively fighting against federalism provoking a strong rebuke from the federalists. NC and CPN-UML leaders had clearly shown that they were not for federalism at any cost to the nation. Thus, they wanted to lead political parties to confrontation not the FDRA.

President of NC Sushil Koirala and CPN-UML leader KP Oli agreed on not agreeing on the proposal floated by the UCPN-Maoist for reaching a deal on all issues concerning the current political deadlock before the resignation of Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai.

Comments: Dr. Bhattarai has already stated that he was ready to quit the office at any time all political parties reach an agreement on the current political issues but the NC and CPN-UML leaders did not want to do so but they wanted Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai to quit the office clearly signaling that they were for confrontation rather than reaching a deal on breaking the current political deadlock.
