Shutdowns and shutdowns Everywhere in Nepal

On July 23, 2009, microbus operators have announced the shutdown of microbus transport in the Bagmati zone for an indefinite period protesting against the police misbehavior toward them today when they have staged a rally protesting against the government’s non-action against the students affiliated to the Nepal Congress burning down a microbus at Jamal, Kathmandu a few days ago. So, the microbus transport has come to a complete standstill in Kathmandu on July 24, 2009.

Locals at the trash-dumping site called Okharpauva have stopped the pickup trucks carrying trash to dump there and returned them back to Kathmandu demanding the government enforce the previous agreement they have reached with the government. Trash collectors have stopped colleting trash in Kathmandu since July 23, 2009. The Department of Waste Management has warned of not collecting garbage from the Kathmandu streets will adversely affect the health of Kathmanduites during the monsoon period.

On July 23, 2009, the Pichadabarga has announced the Tarai shutdown for indefinite period demanding the government enforce the agreement it has reached with the government.

In Western Nepal, former army men and policemen who have deserted from the army and the police during the conflict have continued to block the East-West Highway demanding their reinstatement.

In Dhulikhel, locals have continued to lock the entrance to the Kathmandu University demanding the University administration enforce the understanding the University has reached with the locals. The University has been closed for almost two weeks.

Staffs of the District Development Committee of the Mahotari District have continued to lock the offices of the District Development Committee demanding their security.
