UNODA office in Kathmandu

On Monday, August 18, 2008, Chairman of the Constituent Assembly Subash Nemwang opened the office of the United Nations Regional Center for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNODA) in Kathmandu in an opening ceremony attended by Chief de Cabinet of the UN Secretary General Vijay Nambiar, UNMIN Chief Ian Martin, UN Regional Disarmament Director Agnes Marcaillou, senior government officials, members of diplomatic corps and civil society leaders.

The UN General Assembly established the Regional Center in 1987 to provide the member states of the Asia-Pacific region with substantive support for peace and disarmament on their request. UNODA is a forum for dialogue and cooperation among the states in Asia and the Pacific for disarmament and security. UN and Government of Nepal signed an agreement on relocating the office of the UNODA from New York, USA to Nepal on July 20, 2007.
