Violence Against Women Rising In Nepal

December 5, 2013: as many as 134 cases of violence against women (VAW) were reported in the Morang district in the past four months, this statistics was presented at the event held by the ABC Nepal Biratnagar following the 16-day ongoing campaign against VAW on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, according to the RSS news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’.
Chairperson of ABC-Nepal Biratnagar Bishnu Sharma said that of the 134 reported VAW: four are related to trafficking in women, six of possible trafficking, 43 of domestic violence, seven are of sexual harassment, three are related to missing, four are related to polygamy and seven are of rape among others; during the same period, 57 girls were rescued from the trafficking at the Nepal-India border.
At the event, some of the survivors of VAW shared how and on what charges they were tortured mentally and physically by their husbands, in-laws and members of the family. Most of them were thrashed for not bringing enough dowries from their maternal homes and some even were expelled from the houses on the same charge; for not meeting their expectations, husbands of some survivors of VAW married second women.
Speaking at the event, Advocate Meena Sedhai called on the government to enforce the laws against VAW effectively and to ensure the women's rights. Chief of Women and Children Development Office Morang Gita Mahat urged the government to manage rehabilitation centers set up for the survivors of VAW. Kishori Shakti Protection Center Morang coordinator Rajendra Dhakal, Advocate Kabita Basnet and the survivors of VAW stressed the need for implementing the prevailing laws against VAW.
