Corruption Widely Prevalent In Nepal

Issue 50, December 13, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On December 9, 2009, speaking at an interaction function hosted by the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) to mark the International Day against Corruption, Chief Justice of Supreme Court of Nepal Min Bahadur Rayamajhi has said that the commissions formed in the past to fight corruption cases have failed in achieving their objectives because of the non-cooperation of the politicians in power on curbing corruption. Chief Justice Rayamajhi has said that corruption has penetrated deep into the foundation of democratic institutions distorting the rule of law, judiciary, economic growth, state’s resources, and social values according to the state-run newspaper ‘The Rising Nepal’ of December 11, 2009.

Nepal has already signed off the United Nations Conventions against Corruption (UNCAC) on December 10, 2003 but it has not ratified the Convention, yet. CIAA has lobbied for the ratification of the Convention as soon as possible.

The Transparency International has ranked Nepal 143rd place on the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) indicating rampant corruption prevailing in Nepal.
