By KTM Metro Reporter

December 19, 2010: in the three-day regional workshop on Kailash Sacred Landscape Conservation Initiative held by Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation, Government of Nepal, funded by United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) at Nagarkot in Kathmandu, Nepal, representatives of China, India, and Nepal prepared a draft plan on the conservation and sustainable development of the Kailash area. The plan is on enhancing biodiversity and conserving culture, managing ecosystem and sustainable development, and adapting climate change through the participatory management, and partnerships.

Some 35 representatives from 13 institutions such as Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China; GB Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development, India; and the Central Department of Botany, Tribhuvan University, Nepal, and senior government officials participated in the workshop.

Following the Hindu belief, Lord Shiva resides in Kailash. So, the area is a heaven for all the Hindus that follow Lord Shiva and his teachings. Keeping the environment intact in the Kailash area is the most important for all people in general and Hindus in particular. China, India and Nepal meet in this area. So, participation of these countries in managing the nature and human culture is important.
