Prachanda To Participate In APEC Meeting In Malaysia

Issue 33, August 14, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 8, 2011: Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda accompanied by his most trusted assistant Krishna Bahadur Mahara has left Kathmandu for Malaysia yesterday to attend the meeting of the Asia Pacific Exchange and Cooperation Foundation (APEC) in the capacity of one of the joint-Chairmen of the APEC. Previously, he has attended such meetings in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand but not so openly.

APEC is the Chinese creation, is primarily based in Beijing but it has its offices in Hong Kong.

According to the media reports, APEC has signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Nepal to develop Lumbini: birth Place of Lord Buddha, and is intended to develop Lumbini as the religious, cultural and economic center at the cost of US $3 billion. The money will mainly come from the pocket of China but it pretends to collect from the public charity.

The Nepalese local media have it that Secretary to the Ministry of Culture has quit the office protesting against the tendency of the government of Nepal on non-transparent spending of $3 billion supposed to invest for the development of Lumbini. However, any sensible Nepali hardly believes in the words of such high-ranking bureaucrat.

A few days ago, some Indian media had reported that the government of Nepal had discarded this project but the APEC team working in Nepal for the feasibility study on the proposed development of Lumbini and Prachanda going to attend the meeting of APEC in Malaysia prove that the project is still alive.
