Election for Vice-chairperson of Constituent Assembly

On Friday, November 28, 2008, the Nepalese Constituent Assembly is set to elect its Vice-chairperson. Major political parties have agreed to elect a woman to this position.

The CPN-Maoist has fielded Purna Kumari Subedi a candidate for the position of the Vice-chairperson of the Constituent Assembly. While talking to the Radio-Nepal morning program, one of the Maoist leaders has said that the CPN-Maoist and the CPN-UML have reached the understanding of giving the Vice-chair of the Constituent Assembly to the CPN-Maoist when they elected the CPN-UML candidate Subhas Newbang to the Chair of the Constituent Assembly. The CPN-Maoist and the CPN-UML together have more than the majority required in the 601-member Constituent Assembly.

Other fringe political parties such as Terai Madhes Loktantrik Party has filed the nomination of ‘Ramani Ram’, Nepal Sadbhavana Party ‘Khovari Raya’, CPN- ML ‘Nilam KC’, Nepal Workers' and Peasants' Party ‘Lila Nyaichai’ and Rastriya Prajatantra Party ‘Prativa Rana’.
