Issue 10, March 07, 2010

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

March 5, 2010: In New York, on March 3, 2010, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has said that the Police in Nepal must immediately investigate the fatal shooting of publisher and business owner Arun Shinghaniya, the second murder of a media executive in the country in a month.

“Police must thoroughly investigate Arun Shinghaniya’s murder, the latest in a series of vicious attacks on Nepal’s press,” said CPJ Executive Director Joel Simon. “The government must do more to address the climate of impunity it has allowed to flourish following acts of violence against journalists.”

In the press release posted on scoop.co.nz on March 4, 2010, following the murder of Today media group chairman Arun Shinghaniya on March 1 and threats against other journalists in recent days, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) calls on Nepal’s Government to act immediately to protect journalists facing increasing attacks and threats in Nepal’s Terai region.

“Journalists in Nepal’s southern plains are contending with serious threats and targeted violence amid deteriorating security in the region,” IFJ Asia- Pacific Director Jacqueline Park said. “The Government must direct its authorities to conduct full and immediate investigations into violence against media personnel, and take comprehensive action to ensure local media is able to conduct its work in the public interest.”

Nepalese journalists have staged sit-in protests at various districts demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Madhav Nepal and his Home Minister Bhim Rawal for not providing reporters with security and for not arresting the culprits rather sending the police force to repress the peacefully-protesting reporters against the murder of media men with a baton charge

President of Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) Dharmendra Jha has been furious with Prime Minister Madhav Nepal at not showing any seriousness of providing reporters and media people with security and has demanded immediate resignation of Mr. Nepal saying such a person not being able to provide the people with security has no rights to staying on in the position of Prime Minister anymore.
