November 02, 2010: the World Bank has launched a new initiative called Program for Accountability in Nepal (PRAN) a capacity development program aimed at enhancing knowledge and skills of diverse constituencies to promote greater accountability of government institutions and their programs the Bank's statement issued today says.

The program will work closely with both state and non-state actors such as civil society organizations, media, research groups, committees of parliament and government units working on anti-corruption to increase their capacity for working together to improve the transparency, responsiveness and accountability.

The social accountability is a broad range of actions and mechanisms - beyond voting - that citizens can use to hold the state to account, as well as actions on the part of government, civil society, media and other actors in society that promote or facilitate these efforts, the statement says.

Vice Chairman of National Planning Commission Jagdish Chandra Pokharel has launched the PRAN in a function attended by over 100 participants; in her opening remarks the World Bank''s country director Susane G Goldmark has highlighted the importance of social accountability in Nepal to fight corruption and enhance quality of public services according to the news posted on news.in.msn.com.
