Controversy Over Appointment of Indian Priests At Pashupati

Issue 36, September 6, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On September 4, 2009, Nepalese priests have continued the protest against the pro-Indian Minister for Culture Mirendra Rijal appointing Indian priests at the Pashupati temple. Nepalis having the nationalistic feelings have been giving support for the protest against appointing foreign priests at the Nepalese temple. Some supporters have manhandled the Indian priests at Pashupati according to the state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of September 5, 2009.

In ancient time, Vajracharys were the priests at Pashupati but Pratap Malla appointed Indian priests in their positions instead of appointing other Nepalese priests to avoid the possible conflict it might invite.
