By KTM Metro reporter in Kathmandu

In the presence of Prime Minister Prachanda, the Natural Calamity-hit People Rescue Committee of the Home Ministry made a decision on the measures to be taken for rescuing the flood victims and assisting them in settling temporarily. It decided to request the Ministry of Finance for Rs 16 millions and the Prime Minister’s Fund for assisting natural calamity-hit people for Rs 6 millions. The Committee will use this money for temporary settlement of more than 35,000 people affected by the floods in the Sapta Koshi Rivers.

According to the Nepalese press, the floods in the Sapta Koshi Rivers marooned villages and then swept them away displacing thousands of people and probably killing hundreds of people; the reasons for the floods are the gates of the dam built on the border between Nepal and India by the Indian government were not fully opened, and the Indian Government did not repair and maintain other check-dams despite repeated requests made by the local administration to the concerned authorities.

The Government of Nepal has deployed Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police for rescuing and resettling the flood victims. Three Nepal Army helicopters have been working for rescuing the people from floods.

Prime Minister Prachanda with all-party team members is visiting the flood-affected areas on August 20.

The Nepali Congress has formed a committee under Sujata Koirala to visit and assist the flood-affected people in the Koshi Area.

General Secretary Jhalanath Khanal expressed his sympathy to the flood victims.
