Probably a Mass Grave At Shivapuri

Issue 51, December 23, 2007

On December 19, 2007, acting on a tip-off, the Human Rights activists, relatives of the victims and media reporters visited the Shivapuri National Park Area to the north of Kathmandu to ascertain possibly the mass grave of the people disappeared while in the custody of the Bhairabnath Battalion of the Nepali Army at Maharajgunj, Kathmandu in 2003.

In May 2006, the Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights, Nepal (OHCHR) released a report stating that 49 detainees were disappeared from the Bhairabnath Battalion of the Nepali Army at Maharajgunj, Kathmandu in 2003. However, the Government of Nepal set up by the people’s power has not taken any actions in the report.

Based on the articles found on the site, representatives of the human rights organizations suspected that the site might be the mass grave of those disappeared from the custody of the Nepali Army. National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the OHCHR asked the Home Ministry for protecting the site for preserving the evidences found at the site.

Media reporters complained that the Nepali Army personnel stopped them from taking the photos of the area and the articles found there. Some people think that it might be the attempt to cover up the evidences of the misdeeds.
