Kathmandu: Dr Govinda KC has been on the hunger strike for 20 days today demanding the government to meet his demands enforcing the previous agreements he has reached with the government. This has been the 11th hunger strike Dr KC sat for. He has been in no mood to break his fasting until the State is serious to meet his demands. He has the backup support of the Medical Associations, and Civil Society Groups, and trade union.
Speaking tot the anchor of the Radio Nepal morning program “antar-sambad” Chairman of the parliamentary Committee on Women, Children and Senior Citizens: Jivan Pariyar said that the Committee has unanimously passed the Medical Education Bill after discussing with the representatives of Dr KC, members of Kedar Bhakta Mathema Commission the government had once set up for ascertaining the pros and cons of the medical education in Nepal, and after the detailed discussion at the subcommittee.
Once the bill was passed unanimously means it would not have any difficult to get it through the parliament after the Minister for Education submitting it at the parliament, as the committee has members of the ruling parties and opposition, too.
According to Chairman Pariyar, the bill has included the demands of Dr KC such as not opening any medical colleges in Bhaktapur, Lalitpur and Kathmandu for 10 years as suggested by the Mathema commission, unlike the current every university taking the entrance examinations for the MBBS course, an uniform examination is prescribed in the bill, students have to pay only one-third of the total fee, and then pay annually instead of paying a lump sum amount at the beginning of the MBBS course, to increase the scholarships for the meritorious students to 50 percent, and those students receiving scholarships after passing the MBBS course have to serve in the remote areas for two years and in other areas for three years; so, Dr KC needs to break his fasting otherwise it would be unfortunate.
Supporters of Dr KC have said that the State has reached the agreements with Dr KC several times but the State has disastrously failed in enforcing the agreements, and Dr KC has to sit for hunger strike repeatedly. The ongoing hunger strike has been the 11th one. So, Dr KC would break his fasting or hunger strike only after the State is serious to enforce the agreements.
Doctors in the State-run hospitals have stopped the work except for the emergency in support of Dr KC since Thursday, August 10, 2017.
