Protest Against High Dam In Nepal

Issue 24, June 13, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

June 10, 2010: The Maoist groups have threatened to launch a movement against building a high dam after June 17 if the Joint Project Team working on the 3,300 MW Sapta Kosi Multipurpose Project does not halt its activities immediately, the news posted on the sify.com quoted the Maoist mouthpiece ‘Jana Disha’ daily in Nepali of June 10, 2010.

The Sapta Kosi project is to provide the state of Bihar of India and parts of eastern Nepal with irrigational water and to develop a waterway. The Indian authorities have been for building it opposed by the Maoists and environmentalists in both India and Nepal.

On June 09, 2010, in a press conference held in eastern Nepal, Maoists have said that the dam would submerge at least 80 villages in Nepal, and have alleged that the dam is a secret deal the governments of India and Nepal have reached to give benefits to India at the cost of Nepal. They have said that they would not allow any work on the mega power project until Nepal is restructured into a federal republic and the concerned states would have authority to oversee the project.

The Central Water Commission in its feasibility report recommended building a 269-metre high dam in 1981 but environmentalists have opposed it saying it would be hazardous in an earthquake-prone Nepal.

The government has set up a joint office in Biratnagar of eastern Nepal in 2004 to prepare a detailed project report expected to complete in 30 months but the work remained incomplete due to the security concern in Nepal.
