Expansion of Nepalese Cabinet

Issue 02, January 13, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On January 10, 2008, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala added eight more ministers including state ministers to the already overblown cabinet making it 30-member cabinet. Among the eight ministers, Sujata Koirala, daughter of the Prime Minister Koirala did not get a ministerial portfolio. However, she enjoys all ministerial benefits for doing nothing, as he does not hold any portfolio.

General Secretary of the CPN-UML, Madhav Kumar Nepal complained that Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala did not consult him for expanding the cabinet although the incumbent government is the government of the seven-party alliance.

Minister without portfolio, Sujata Koirala is the staunch supporter of the monarchy. She even called for reviving the Constitution of Nepal of 1990 that made the monarchy unavoidable. She made great efforts on stopping the removal of the constitutional monarchy from the constitution of the Nepali Congress during the General Committee meeting of the Nepali Congress party. Now, she as a member of the cabinet may help her father Prime Minister Koirala in the attempts to preserve the monarchy that has been already deadwood.
