Maoists’ three Conditions to Form Government
On Thursday, July 24, 2008, in the meeting of representatives of all 25 political parties represented in the Constituent Assembly (CA) held at the parliamentary office of the CPN-Maoist, Singhadurbar to discuss the issues of forming a new government, CPN-Maoist Chairman Prachanda made it clear that his party would form a new government if the following three conditions were met:
First, NC, CPN-UML and MPRF need to dissolve their three-party alliance formed on July 19, 2008; second, the to-be-formed government needs to last two years of its term; third, the Common Minimum Program needs to be formulated, and it needs to include the commitments made to the people by his party in its commitment paper during the CA election.
Three parties Reject Prachanda’s conditions
NC, CPN-UML, and MPRF leaders said that the conditions put forward by Maoists’ Chairman were not acceptable to them. NC leader said that the new tripartite alliance was for taking the peace process to a logical end. CPN-UML leader said that such conditions were unnecessary. MPRF simply laughed at the conditions.
Newly Elected Vice-President Under Fire
Taking oath in non-Nepali language “Hindi”, newly elected vice-president Paramananda Jha sparked protests all over Nepal on July 24, 2008.
Students burned down vice-president Permananda Jha in effigy in different parts of the Kathmandu Valley. Students also staged protest rallies in Jhapa, Nawalparasi, Chitwan and Sarlahi, and also in the western terai region. Protestors shouted slogans against the vice-president. They said that they would continue protest rallies until Mr. Jha apologizes to the Nepalese people for his anti-national behavior.
Police Arrest Women Distributing Pamphlets
On July 24, 2008, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) summoned Home Secretary Umesh Mainali and Inspector General of Police Om Bikram Rana to the NHRC headquarters and instructed them to curb the violence against women that were on the rise in the recent days according to “The Rising Nepal” of July 25, 2008. NHRC said that its attention had been drawn to the police arresting 13 women rights activists who were distributing pamphlets at the International Convention Center where the session of Constituent Assembly was to be held. The women were distributing pamphlets to the CA members for lobbying for their cause. In a statement NHRC said that police released all the women rights activists in the presence of the NHRC monitoring team.
President to Attend Bhotojatra
On July 24, 2008, Lalitpur District Administration Office sent an official letter through Home Ministry to the first President of Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, Dr. Rambaran Yadav requesting him as the Head of State to attend the traditional Bhotojatra of Rato Machhindranath to be held in Lalitpur on Sunday, July 26, 2008.
The tradition has it that the Head of State needs to attend the Bhotojatra. Acting as the Head of the State, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala attended the Bhotojatra last year following the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007.
Rifleman Bhim Bahadur Gurung Receives MC
Rifleman Bhim Bahadur Gurung from Nepal received an MC for exposing himself to intense enemy fire in Afghanistan as he crossed open ground twice, the second time burdened by a wounded comrade on his shoulder and with no cover available until he reached the compound according to the BBC NEWS posted on its website on July 25, 2008.
