Musharraf’s Determination to Stay in Power

Issue 46, November 18, 2007

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On November 15, 2007, Pakistani President Musharraf formed an interim government to holding elections obviously under the international pressure. Pakistan's shattered Supreme Court was to hold hearing a legal challenge to the state of emergency, and then the legality of the president’s election held in October. Both the cases might go in favor of President Musharraf, as the president had already replaced the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan with the president’s puppet. So, the president might hold on to power for some time to come.

President Pervez Musharraf had been saying to the foreign reporters that the emergency was the only way to ensure free and fair elections. However, his opponents said that they would boycott the elections if held under the state of emergency, as the elections held under the state of emergency would not be fair and free.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry insisted on that he was still legally the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Former Prime Minister Benizer Bhutto demanded the reinstatement of the Chief Justice. Law professionals have been protesting the state of emergency and the president’s interference in the business of the Supreme Court and High Courts of Pakistan; they are demanding the independence of judiciary.
