Issue 50, December 14, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On December 08, 2008, the Bhutanese State-run website ‘Kuenselonline.com’ reported that the Government of Bhutan wanted India to produce 10, 000 MW power by 2020. Minister for Economic Affairs of Bhutan Lyonpo Khandu Wangchu would sign an agreement on the 10,000 MW plan with the Government of India during his visit to New Delhi, India scheduled for December 21, 2008. Indian Minister for Power Sushil Kumar Shinde was in Thimphu, Bhutan to discuss the power generation plan.

In a reply to the question whether similar plan of Nepal on producing 10,000 MW by 2020 would affect the Bhutan’s plan, Indian Minister for Power Sushil Kumar Shinde said that it would not happen and Bhutan would be given top priority.
