Issue 33, August 15, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 14, 2010: legislator Ram Kumari Yadav of UCPN-Maoist sensing the cooking gas leakage in her rented house at Tinkune in Kathmandu at 3:00 AM on Friday, August 13, has gone to the kitchen to check it but set fire when she switched on the light causing her to severely burn. She was rushed to the nearby Kantipur Hospital but noting the severity of the burn, doctors referred her to the Bir Hospital.

According to the local news, the gas leakage has been due to the safety lapse the gas suppliers have caused not discarding the gas cylinders that have been more than ten-year old. Old cylinders are vulnerable to the gas leakage but the gas suppliers have been using even 20-year old gas cylinders according to the Consumers’ Rights Protection Forum.

Chairman of UCPN-Maoist has requested the Indian ambassador to help Yadav to treat in the Indian hospital, as doctors at Bir Hospital recommended. In response, the Indian embassy has arranged an air ambulance immediately but it could not land in Kathmandu due to the unfavorable weather condition. However, early on Saturday, August 14, 2010, she was airlifted to New Delhi on an air ambulance.
