Convicting Corrupt Police Officers In Nepal

February 14, 2012: hearing on the corruption case filed by the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) against Nepalese police officers and the director of the British Company and his agent in Nepal at the Special Court, the bench of three judges such as Gauri Bahadur Karki, Om Prakash Mishra and Kedar Prasad Chalise of the Special Court has yesterday convicted three former police chiefs, and a British businessman and his agent in Nepal of the irregularities in purchasing armored vehicles and other equipment for the Nepalese UN Peace-keeping Mission in Sudan, and passed sentences of jail terms on them and fined them with millions of rupees.
CIAA has filed corruption cases against 34 police officers; the Special Court has convicted three of them and cleared the remaining 31 police officers off the charges.
The three police officers convicted of irregularities in purchasing the equipment and armored vehicles are IGPs such as Om Bikram Rana, Hem Bahadur Gurung and Ramesh Chanda Thakuri. All of them got two-year jail term. The Special court fined Om Bikram Rana with Rs 178.62 millions, Hem Bahadur Gurung with Rs 60.48 millions, and Ramesh Chanda Thakuri with Rs 40.85 millions.
Similarly, the Special Court has passed the sentence of two-year jail term on Michael Rider: director of a British company called Assured Risks that supplied the equipment, and fined him with Rs 284 millions, and his agent in Nepal: Sambhu Bharati with Rs 142 millions, and passed the sentence of one-year jail term on him.
