Successful Completion of CA Election

Voting has been largely peaceful in Nepal on April 10, and the long-waited election for a Constituent Assembly has been successfully completed. The elected CA members will craft a new constitution for a new Nepal. However, the Election Commission (EC) suspended the election in 33 polling stations due to controversy among the supporters of the political parties. The EC will hold re-polling in those polling stations. The EC has set up about 20,900 polling stations for the election.

In a message to the nation after the completion of the election for a CA, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has said that the first objective of the country and the six decade long dream of the Nepalis has been fulfilled today according to ‘The Rising Nepal’ of April 11, 2008. He said that the election to the CA was an accumulated achievement of the revolutions in the past. The day, April 10, has become an unforgettable day in the history of Nepal and the country has made a bright and new history with the commencement of the new Nepali year 2065 (2008). All the credit for the success goes to the Nepali people, Prime Minister Koirala added. He also congratulated all political parties, civil society, Election Commission, international community, employees and other well wishers who contributed to make the day a success.

Similarly, Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist Prachanda congratulated the Nepalese people on their dedication, sacrifice and initiation that they exhibited during the historic CA polls for change and a lasting peace. "The Nepali people have established their prudence and greatness globally once again by holding the historic CA polls and replying to millions of queries and doubts regarding the polls through their foresight and conduct,” chairman Prachanda said in a statement. The success of the election has become a matter of happiness and pride for the party, as the Maoist party not only fought for ten years, but it has also exhibited sacrifice, dedication and patience during the two year long peace process and CA election.

General Secretary of CPN-UML Madhav Kumar Nepal also congratulated all the Nepalese people on their participation in the constituent assembly election in large number for establishing a federal democratic republic following the mandate of the Nepalese People's historic movement. He deplored the incidents of violence occurred during the election and expressed grief over the loss of lives.

UNMIN Chief Congratulates Nepalis

Chief of the United Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) Ian Martin congratulated the Nepalese people on demonstrating their commitment to democracy turning out in large numbers to vote on the Thursday's historic Constituent Assembly election. "Election was conducted by and large in a peaceful and orderly manner, though I regret the loss of at least three lives and offer my condolences to the families,” Mr. Martin said.

"This has been Nepal's most observed election, and in the coming days and weeks both international and national observer groups will be making public their findings regarding the electoral process, including preparations, polling and the post-polling process.”

UNMIN's electoral staff will remain in the regions and districts until the vote-count is complete, and the monitoring of arms and armies will continue. OHCHR-Nepal human rights officers will continue their monitoring work from their five regional offices, UNMIN press statement said.

India Welcomes the successful completion of Election in Nepal

The successful Constituent Assembly elections in Nepal are a welcome and historic step toward realizing the aspirations of the people of Nepal for a democratic future, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs of India said in a press statement on Thursday. April 10. This happy outcome is a product of the determination of the people of Nepal, with significant contributions made by the political parties and the Election Commission of Nepal, the statement said. The Constituent Assembly provides for the people of Nepal to determine the manner of their governance and their future. As always, India will stand by the people of Nepal in the major tasks of democratization and development that lie ahead while building a stable, prosperous and peaceful Nepal.

Former US President Jimmy Carper is Happy

Former US President Jimmy Carter has said that he is quite happy from the election process and the enthusiasm of the voters. Talking to the newsmen after inspection of the polling booth at the Ex-Army men's Camp at Pulchowk, he said that this election would open up a new avenue for golden future of Nepal. “This is an epoch-making election, Former Carter said, adding election was stalled when I had come in June last year, it was stalled again when I came in November, but this time I am happy to see election happen.” "I saw large number of people queuing up for voting systematically”, he said, and added even if news of clashes came from some places, this was basically a peaceful election.
