Issue 32, August 10, 2008

BY KTM Metro reporter in Kathmandu

On Monday, August 04, 2008, eight local organizations headed by the indigenous people called Tharus again begun a protest rally against the Vice-president Permananda Jha taking oath in Hindi and against ‘one-Madhesh one-province’ put forward by Madheshi Peoples Rights Forum. The 22 districts of the eastern Nepal and the western Nepal areas populated by Tharus were totally closed down.

On July 23, 2008, the newly elected vice-president Jha translating the oath administered by President Dr. Rambaran Yadav in Nepali triggered a nation wide protest against the vice-president. On July 29, 2008, Mr. Jha in his public apology statement said that he signed off the oath-document in Nepali.

According to the Nepalese media reports, Mr. Jha had been involved in a series of corruption scandals while he was working as a judge at different Courts in Nepal.
