Announcing Final Results Of Elections To A New CA In Nepal

Issue 49, December 8, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 4, 2013: the Election Commission yesterday made public the final results of the elections to a new CA. According to the election results the EC announced yester, the NC won 196 seats: 105 directly elected and 91 through the proportional representation election, the CPN-UML 175: 91 directly and 84 indirectly, the UCPN-Maoist 80: 26 directly and 54 indirectly, RPP-Nepal managed to receive 24 seats indirectly even though it did not win a single directly, MPRF-D 14: 4 directly and 10 indirectly, RPP 13: 3 directly and 10 indirectly, MPRF-Nepal 10: 2 directly and 8 indirectly, TMDP 11: 4 directly and 7 indirectly, other parties 52: 5 directly and 47 indirectly, according to the news in the ‘gorkhapatra’ of today.

Clearly NC and CPN-UML jointly with other like-minded parties could have two-thirds majority in the new CA keeping aside the UCPN-Maoist and the Madhesis. However, they should not confuse forming a new government with the crafting a new constitution. Most of the leaders of the NC and CPN-UML have emboldened by the elections results and have been saying to craft a new constitution with the two-thirds majority votes whereas the opposition has been saying that they would not accept a constitution crafted without building a consensus on it. the opposition is mainly of the UCPN-Maoist and the Madhesi parties.

NC and CPN-UML have a good menu to choose for forming a new government. Either NC or CPN-UML could form a new government with the support of other political parties. Leaders of both the parties have been playing with the numbers. They have almost forgotten to the commitment they made to craft a new constitution within six months at minimum and within a year at maximum while playing with numbers to form a new government.
