Regular Offerings to Lord Pashupati By Indian Priests

Issue 37, September 13, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On September 5, 2009, the government has used security force to make the government-appointed Indian priests possible to perform regular offerings to Lord Pashupati in Kathmandu; Minister for Culture Minendra Rijal and Indian Ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood have visited the Pashupati area to make sure the security works for the safety of the Indian priests according to the state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of September 6, 2009.

The Nepalese priests have been protesting the appointment of Indian priests at the Pashupati temple and have said that they would continue to protest. However, the Madhav administration has appointed Indian priests disregarding the Nepalese people’s aspirations for the Nepalese priests working at the holiest Hindu temple in Kathmandu.

It is shame on Minister for Culture Minendra Rijal who needed the cover of the Indian ambassador to visit the Pashupati area to see how the Indian priests have been working disregarding the Nepalese priests’ protest against the appointment of the Indian priests at the Pashupati temple.

How long the current government would be able to hold on its decision on running the Nepalese holiest shrine by the Indian priests remains to be seen. One thing is clear that the current coalition government of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist and Leninist and the Nepali Congress has been very weak to counter the Indian encroachment on the Nepalese land in the Nepal-India border areas and now on the Kathmandu. So, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has been unable even to speak against the Indian encroachment on the Nepalese land and the harassment of the Nepalis by the Indians in the border areas not to mention stopping them from encroaching on the Nepalese territory and harassing Nepalis.
