Former Custom Official Rajbhandari Convicted Of Corruption

November 27, 2012: hearing on the case filed by the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) against former Custom Official Sabitri Rajbhandari on September 1, 2005 accusing him of amassing Rs. 29,081,821 illegally, a bench comprising the Chief Judge of the Special Court Gauri Bahadur Karki and members such as Om Prakash Mishra and Kedar Prasad Chalise has ruled that former Custom Official Sabitri Rajbhandari possessed the assets beyond her earnings, so convicted her of corruption, and sentenced her to one-year jail, and confiscated her illegally earned Rs. Rs 24.6 million and imposed on her a fine of the same amount today, according to the local Nepalese media.
Previously, the Special Court had acquitted her in 2007 citing the expiry of the time limit to file the case but after the CIAA appealed the Supreme Court of Nepal for re-hearing the case, the Supreme Court of Nepal ordered the Special Court on April 13, 2012 to hold the re-hearing on the case.
The Special Court found out that Rajbhandari had just Rs 2,373,500 before she took the office of the chief custom officer but she managed to deposit Rs 22.9 million later on, according to myrepublica.com.
