Completing Peace Process And Constitution Writing

February 27, 2012: A meeting of United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) leaders held at Singha Durbar in Kathmandu yesterday has decided to play a constructive role in completing the peace process and constitution writing supporting the government in the historical tasks of peace process and statute writing, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes. UDMF leaders at the meeting have came to the conclusion that the ruling of the Supreme Court of Nepal on convicting Chairman of Madhesi People’s Rights Forum-Republican Jayaprakash Prasad Gupta of corruption was an attack on the Madhes movement. In the press statement, the UDMF leaders have said that the UDMF is serious about the ruling of the Supreme Court of Nepal on the corruption case and the UDMF would never stop its campaign for federalism in the country, and would remain united until Nepal becomes a federal republic.

The UDMF is an alliance of four Madheshi political parties. They had united to launch a Madhesh movement demanding its autonomy in the federal democratic republic of Nepal. The Madesh movement had been the last straw on the monarchy before it felt apart in 2008. The Nepalese Maoists had been instrumental to tear down the despotic monarchy.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Sixth National Games at Dhangadi Stadium in Kailali on Sunday, Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has said that the government has been focusing on peace, constitution and good governance, and the peace process and the constitution writing would be completed on schedule, as the talks among the political leaders have been moving ahead in a positive way, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.

Speaking at the opening function of a newly constructed FM radio building of ‘Ilam FM’, Chairman of Constituent Assembly Subash Nembang in Pashupatinagar, Ilam on Sunday has said that the political parties have no option but to draft the new constitution and promulgate it by May 27, 2012 otherwise the nation would plunge into a deeper crisis, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes. "The nation might be turned into a battlefield if the political parties fail to fulfill people’s aspiration for peace and constitution; so, I’m hopeful that the political parties will build a consensus on the contentious issues concerning governance system, electoral system and state restructuring,” ‘The Rising Nepal’ quoted Nembang.

At the meeting of top leaders of UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML held at the Maharajgunj residence of NC President Sushil Koirala on the Sunday morning, Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda has put forward the proposal for vacating the cantonments he prepared as the task assigned to him by the earlier meeting of the leaders of the three parties held on Friday, February 24, 2012; NC president has presented the basic concept of the two commissions; the previous meeting also had assigned NC President Koirala to the task of making a proposal for the formation of Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Commission on the enforced disappearances, and CPN-UML senior leader Madhav Nepal to the task of a proposal for resolving the contentious issues concerning the new constitution, mainly related to state restructuring, form of governance and electoral model; however, the CPN-UML leader has failed to show up in the meeting, as Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal has claimed the task for himself, as other two leaders are also the head of their respective parties, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.

Speaking to reporters at the NC parliamentary party office in Singha Durbar today, Vice-president of NC Ram Chandra Poudel has expressed his doubt about the ability of Chairman Prachanda to enforce his proposal for vacating the PLA cantonments in three weeks in view of the past failure in transforming his words into deeds according to the news posted on the nepalnews.com.
