Preparing Security Agencies For Any Eventuality After August 31

Issue 28, July 10, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

July 6, 2011: speaking at the inaugural function of opening a two-day meeting of representatives of the security agencies of the western region held in Pokhara yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara holding the portfolio of Home Minister has said that the security officials should be prepared for any eventuality after the three-month-extended term of the Constituent Assembly (CA) comes to an end on August 31, 2011 no matter whether the CA would complete the peace process and the draft of a new constitution or not.

Mr. Mahara has asked the security officials not to work on party line and not to identify themselves supporters of one party or another, and don’t wait for the change of government rather work sincerely for the security of the common folks; the previous practice has been to transfer the security officials and local administrators called Chief District Officers (CDOs) following their political affiliation. He also has said that former prime ministers, ministers, members of parliament and leaders of political parties have sent their recommendations for transferring the security officials and CDOs of their choice to their respective constituency.

Mr. Mahara also has instructed the security officials and CDOs in making the security agencies as the corruption free agencies and has said that he is not for making money using his office, too.

The meeting of the western regional security officials and CDOs has been held in Pokhara following the decision of the Ministry of Home to hold such meetings: one each at all five regions of the country to review the security situation in the country and then formulate future security strategy. Recently, the Home Ministry has held such a meeting of the eastern regional security official in Biratnagar.
