Carter Center Appreciates Preparations for Holding Elections

Issue 40, October 6, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

October 3, 2013: in a statement released in Kathmandu on Tuesday, October 3, 2013, the Carter Center has appreciated the Election Commission’s efforts to finalize a new voter roll for the November 19 Constituent Assembly elections. The Carter Center said that the assessment made based on the programs coordinated by the EC and the Ministry of Home Affairs to link voter registration and citizenship certificate distribution outside of district headquarters from March-July had been very commendable, according to the news posted on the ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’.

The Center also checked the claims and objection processes implemented after the original registration cutoff date on July 15, as well as the re-opened voter registration window of August 17-23.

The Center is concerned that the number of registered voters is below the original targets set by the Election Commission, potentially leaving a significant section of the population disenfranchised in the next election, said David Hamilton, field office director for The Carter Center in Kathmandu. “There also is a pressing need to conduct an audit of the register to ensure its accuracy,” he said.
