Changing Status Of Nepal Samvat

Issue 44, October 30, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

October 26, 2011: Spokesman for the Government of Nepal Narayankaji Shrestha has told the reporters that the government has yesterday decided to give recognition to Nepal Samvat as the official calendar in the cabinet meeting held at the state secretariat Singhdurbar in Kathmandu.

The government has set up a taskforce presided over by Padma Ratna Tuladhar to study the ways and means to incorporate Nepal Samvat and Bikram Samvat for the official uses. The taskforce has one month to study and make recommendations to the government.

We are not against using the local calendars such as Nepal Samvat and Bikam Samvat. At the same time we need to be practicable. So far, in practice, Nepalis have been using Nepal Samvat and Bikram Samvat for the national affairs and Gregorian calendar for the international affairs. Using three calendars is confusing not only to the foreigners working in Nepal but also to the Nepalis, as we confuse the date in Nepal Samvat and Bikram Samvat with the date in the Gregorian calendar. So, for all practical purposes, we need to follow one calendar that is the Gregorian calendar to do businesses with all nations in the world.
