January 6, 2013: speaking at a function held by the Pushpalal Memorial Foundation to mark the 13th day of the death of the communist leader Gauribhakta Pradhan in Kathmandu today, Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal said that the country was facing growing threat of authoritarianism, and accused the UCPN-Maoist of imposing authoritarianism frustrating the efforts of the parties made on building a consensus, therefore, the CPN-UML had been preparing for a vigorous struggle against it, according to the state-run RSS news posted on thehimalayantimes.com today.
Speaking at an interaction program held by the Reporters’ Club in Kathmandu today, NC leader Sujata Koirala said that NC President Sushil Koirala was ready to withdraw his name from the candidacy for a consensus prime minister. The former Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala claimed that the NC president despite his reluctance was nominated to the leadership of a purported consensus government under the pressure of the CPN-UML. Going against her party’s official line, she opined that the NC should join the incumbent government accepting the Ministry of Home Affairs as proposed by the Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda. She said that the NC should set its partisan interests aside, and take decisions to join the Baburam Bhattatrai- led government to find a way out of the current political stalemate, according to the THT ONLINE of today.
Talking to National News Agency: RSS at his office today, Foreign Minister-cum-Vice-Chairman of the ruling UCPN-Maoist Narayan Kaji Shrestha said that the election to a CA must be held before coming May by forging a national consensus. Vice-Chairman Shrestha claimed that he has resumed the effort on building a consensus; political parties need to forge a consensus by making the CA elections as a bottom line. He made it clear to senior leader of CPN-UML Madhav Kumar Nepal that if the elections to the CA could not be held in April/May, restoration of the CA would be another option to deliver a constitution to the people. He proposed senior leader Nepal to resuscitate the CA, promulgate a new constitution, and then form a NC-led government for holding elections to a legislature parliament, according to the RSS news posted on thehimalayantimes.com of today.
Speaking at the regular news briefing at his party headquarters in Kathmandu today, spokesman for UCPN-Maoist Agni Sapkota said that foreign powers had been at work to foil the ongoing peace process and that the recent arrest of a serving Nepali Army Colonel in the United Kingdom was a case in point. Spokesman Sapkota said, “Of late certain moves have surfaced to derail and end the peace process. Dangerous conspiracy has already unleashed from the overseas. But the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML are yet to understand.” He further said the British government’s move without informing our government was a serious intervention in the Nepal’s sovereignty. “We strongly condemn the arrest of Colonel Kumar Lama and demand his immediate release,” he said, adding that, “Nepal would take necessary action against him if he was found guilty,” according to the ‘HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE’ of yesterday.
