Possible Expansion of Council of Ministers

On Saturday, June 13, 2009, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal and Nepali Congress (NC) President Girija Prasad Koirala have met at the Koirala residence, Maharajgunj, Kathmandu and have agreed on the allocation of the ministerial portfolios to their respective parties according to the ‘Gorkhapatra’ of June 14, 2009. Following the agreement the two leaders have reached on the distribution of ministerial portfolios, the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist and Leninist (CPN-UML) will receive six ministerial portfolios such as Finance, Home, Defense, Communication, Peace, and Public Administration; similarly, the NC will receive the ministerial portfolios such as Foreign, Water Resources, Local Development, Health, Labor and Law. NC leader Nidhi has predicted that the Cabinet will be expanded on Sunday, June 14, 2009.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, June 13, 2009, speaking to the reporters after the joint meeting of the central committee and parliamentary party of the Madheshi People’s Rights Forum (MPRF) of the Gacchedar’s faction, Deputy Prime Minister Bijaya Kumar Gacchedar has said that his party has played a crucial role in making a new government possible; so his party is not prepared to accept any leftover ministerial portfolios, and has stuck at the demand for the Home Portfolio. He has made it clear if his party does not receive the ministerial portfolios following his demanded, his party will pull out of the government but will continue to support the government.
Similarly, the Tarai Madhesh Democratic Party (TMDP) has disagreed on the distribution of the ministerial portfolios between the NC and CPN-UML without consulting other political parties in the coalition. Leader of TMDP Mahanta Thakur and of MPRF Bijaya Gacchedar have talked about the portfolio distribution the two major parties have made between them.
