Fuel Shortage In Kathmandu

Issue 50, December 13, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

December 8, 2009: fuel shortage in the Kathmandu Valley has continued. The Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has stopped supplying fuel to the private distributors saying the transport of the fuel has been stopped since the petroleum workers have gone on strike. The NOC has been boasting that it has sufficient stock in the Kathmandu Valley to supply for three months but it is smart to stop fuel supply immediately on any pretext available. The petroleum workers and the distributors have settled their differences and the workers are back to regular work but the NOC has not been supplying petroleum products to the private distributors causing tremendous inconvenience to the consumers. The NOC has the monopoly on supplying the petroleum products.

At the same time, the NOC has suspended some of its staffs and fired the staffs on contract and daily-wage stating that they have jointly mismanaged thirty million rupees worth of petroleum products.
