Set The Date For Elections

March 29, 2013: the Election Commission (EC) has held a meeting of the representatives of the UCPN-Maoist, NC, CPN-UML, and UDMF at its office yesterday to discuss the number of election-related Acts, and to set the date for the elections. The Chief Election Commissioner said that it would take some time to set the date for the elections, as the election-related Acts have to be amended according to the news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com of today.

The Chief Election Commissioner said that the EC has already started off the necessary actions on amending the Voter Act, Citizenship Act and so on; the EC would hold another meeting with the representations of the four major parties today to discuss the matters again.

Speaking at a press meet held in Saptari at the district election office yesterday, Election commissioner Dr. Ayodhi Prasad Yadav said that the EC was ready to hold new Constituent Assembly elections in June. Commissioner Dr Yadav said that the EC had completed 80 per cent of work related to collection of the voters’ names; the EC had already informed the government about its preparations and the challenges. "The EC is making the poll preparations in an intensive manner," he said. The EC had no authority to set poll date; only the government set the election date. An environment conducive to elections has not developed, yet; so, the date was not set, he said according to ‘gorkhapatraonline.com of today.

UCPN-Maoist has asked the Chairman of IEC to declare the date for holding elections. At the meeting held at the residence of Chairman of UCPN-Maoist in Kathmandu, the UCPN-Maoist decided to ask the IEC to announce the date of elections without delay.
