Integration Of Combatants Into Nepal Army

January 26, 2010: speaking at a function held in Kathmandu, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has said that the government is committed to complete the peace process following the agreements such as 12-point Understanding, Interim Constitution, Comprehensive Peace Accord, and decisions of the Army Integration Special Committee (AISC). The Prime Minister has also said that soon the combatants will be placed on the AISC; they will sing the songs of peace rather than the revolutionary songs.
Nepali Congress vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel has revealed that both NC President Girija Prasad Koirala and UCPN-Maoist Chairman Prachada have agreed to integrate 5,000 Maoist combatants into the security forces according to the state-run newspaper ‘The Rising Nepal’.
At the same time, Acting President of NC Sushil Koirala has been saying in public that integration of the Maoist combatants into the Nepal Army will invite a civil war.
The AISC has started discussion on the modality and the action plan on the integration of the Maoist combatants presented by Prime Minister Madhav Nepal to bring the Maoist combatants under its control. "We discussed the chain of command and the secretariat for the Maoist combatants," Dr. Ram Saran Mahat told the reporters after the meeting. A Technical Committee of the AISC has submitted a report on the procedure of the chain of command of the Maoist army after its separation from the UCPN-Maoist according to the state-run newspaper ‘The Rising Nepal’.
