Call Bids For Printing MRPs Again Says PAC

Issue 15, April 11, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

April 9, 2010: the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has instructed Prime Minister Madhav Nepal to call international bids for printing machine-readable passports following the rules and regulations and canceling the award of the contract given to the Indian-government owned company. The PAC has also stated that it is quite unfortunate that the government has abused its authority and not followed the rule of law.

The printing of MRPs involves billions of rupees. So, it is natural that Prime Minister Madhav Nepal and his deputy Sujata Koirala have cancelled the international bids for printing MRPs, and put themselves above the law and have awarded the contract of the printing of MRPs to the Indian company clearly for financial benefits for themselves at the cost of millions of Nepalis that would need to pay for the high price of MRPs printed in India.

The UCPN-Maoist has called a nationwide shutdown on Monday, April 12, 2010, to protest the government giving the contract of printing of MRPs to the Indian company without following the rule of law.
